📰 TODAY'S TOP 10 DEVELOPMENTS EVERY BANKER SHOULD KNOW
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
1 | 🏦 RBI / MONETARY POLICY RBI HIKES REPO TO 5.50%; STANCE SHIFTS TO CALIBRATED TIGHTENING
The RBI's 63rd MPC meeting concluded on 7 October 2026 with a unanimous 25-bps repo-rate hike.
🔹 Repo Rate: 5.50% 🔹 SDF: 5.25% 🔹 MSF: 5.75% 🔹 Bank Rate: 5.75% 🔹 Stance: Calibrated Tightening
The MPC cited inflation risks from high energy prices, deficient monsoon, El Niño and broadening price pressures, alongside strong growth and credit aggregates.
WHAT DOES "CALIBRATED TIGHTENING" MEAN?
Rate cuts are off the table in the near term. Future policy action is essentially a hike or a pause, depending on incoming growth and inflation data.
BANKER'S LENS
Repo ↑ ↓ Funding cost / lending-rate pressure ↓ Credit demand ↓ NIM & ALM impact
EXAM EDGE: 25 bps → Repo 5.50% → Calibrated Tightening

2 | 🇮🇳 RBI / GROWTH & INFLATION GDP 7.1%; CPI 5.2% — RBI'S NEW FY27 OUTLOOK
RBI has projected:
🔹 FY27 Real GDP Growth: 7.1% 🔹 Q2: 7.2% 🔹 Q3: 6.9% 🔹 Q4: 6.8% 🔹 FY27 CPI Inflation: 5.2% 🔹 FY27 Core Inflation: 4.4%
Q1 FY27 GDP growth was estimated at 7.8%.
August CPI inflation rose to 4.8% from 4.5% in July.
POLICY CHALLENGE
Strong growth + persistent inflation risks → Monetary policy must balance price stability with growth.
BANKING TRANSMISSION
GDP → Investment → Credit demand → Employment → Deposits → Banking business
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
3 | 🏦 RBI / RESERVE MANAGEMENT CRR/SLR SHORTFALL PENALTY RATES RISE
Following the increase in Bank Rate to 5.75%, RBI has revised penal interest rates linked to the Bank Rate.
🔹 Bank Rate + 3% = 8.75% 🔹 Bank Rate + 5% = 10.75%
Effective immediately.
BANKER'S TAKEAWAY
CRR/SLR compliance → Liquidity discipline → Regulatory compliance → Avoidable cost prevention
EXAM EDGE: Bank Rate 5.75% + 3% = 8.75% Bank Rate 5.75% + 5% = 10.75%

4 | 🏦 CAPITAL ADEQUACY RBI AMENDS PRUDENTIAL CAPITAL NORMS
RBI's Twelfth Amendment Directions, 2026 align selected capital-adequacy requirements with international standards.
A key provision applies a:
🔹 2% risk weight
to specified trade exposures to a Qualified Central Counterparty (QCCP) arising from OTC derivatives, exchange-traded derivatives and SFTs.
The amendment also clarifies treatment of incurred CVA losses while determining exposure at default.
BANKER'S LENS
Derivatives → Counterparty risk → CVA → EAD → Capital requirement
EXAM EDGE: Specified QCCP trade exposure → 2% risk weight

5 | 🏦 BANKING REGULATION PAYTM PAYMENTS BANK REMOVED FROM SECOND SCHEDULE
RBI has excluded Paytm Payments Bank Limited from the Second Schedule to the RBI Act, 1934.
The development follows the cancellation of its banking licence and subsequent winding-up proceedings.
REGULATORY LESSON
Banking licence → Regulatory compliance → Depositor protection → Supervisory action → Financial stability
IMPORTANT DISTINCTION
Removal from the Second Schedule reflects the bank's regulatory status; it should not be confused with the status of the wider Paytm digital ecosystem.
BANKER'S TAKEAWAY: Regulatory compliance is fundamental to banking continuity.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
6 | 📊 SEBI / DEBT MARKET CREDIT RISK-O-METER INTRODUCED FOR DEBT SECURITIES
SEBI has introduced the Credit Risk-o-Meter as an additional disclosure mechanism for debt securities.
Other 7 October measures relate to:
🔹 Merchant-banker requirements for specified private-placement debt 🔹 ISIN requirements for privately placed debt securities
WHY IT MATTERS
Better disclosure → Better investor understanding → Better risk assessment → Better price discovery → Stronger debt-market discipline
EXAM EDGE: SEBI → Credit Risk-o-Meter → Debt Securities
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
7 | 💳 DIGITAL PAYMENTS UPI: 24.51 BILLION TRANSACTIONS IN AUGUST
NPCI data show that UPI processed:
🔹 24,508.96 million transactions 🔹 Approx. 24.51 billion transactions 🔹 Value: ₹29.82 lakh crore 🔹 Banks live on UPI: 752
UPI remains a major pillar of India's digital-payment infrastructure.
