1. π¦ RBI APPOINTS SUDHAKAR MALLI AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
RBI has appointed Shri Sudhakar Malli as Executive Director with effect from 1 October 2026.
Before his promotion, he was Chief General Manager-in-Charge of the Department of Supervision.
His experience includes:
πΉ Around three decades with RBI
πΉ More than 2Β½ decades in supervision
πΉ Banks, NBFCs and cooperative banks
πΉ Around five years of overseas supervisory experience
πΉ Currency Management
As Executive Director, he will look after Department of Supervision (Supervisory Assessment).
π― BANKER CONNECT
Supervisory assessment directly connects with:
Governance β Risk Management β Compliance β Asset Quality β Financial Resilience
π EXAM POINT:
Sudhakar Malli β RBI Executive Director β Supervisory Assessment
ββββββββββββββββββ
2. π¦ RBI REVISES BANK SHAREHOLDING APPROVAL FRAMEWORK
RBI has introduced a one-time approval route for subsequent acquisitions of major shareholding by eligible institutional investors.
The eligible categories include:
πΉ Mutual Funds
πΉ Insurance Companies
πΉ Pension Funds
The one-time approval may cover subsequent acquisitions up to 10% of paid-up share capital or voting rights, subject to prescribed conditions.
The distinction is important:
Initial acquisition β Prior RBI approval
Subsequent qualifying acquisition β One-time approval route
The framework covers specified banking-company categories including commercial banks, small finance banks, payments banks and local area banks.
π― WHY IT MATTERS
The reform aims to reduce repetitive approval requirements while retaining regulatory oversight over significant bank ownership.
π EXAM POINT:
Special one-time approval β Subsequent acquisition up to 10%
ββββββββββββββββββ
3. π BANK SHAREHOLDING β 5% THRESHOLD REMAINS IMPORTANT
The revised framework strengthens continuous monitoring of ownership.
Investors covered by the one-time approval must report changes when aggregate shareholding moves across the 5% threshold, within the prescribed timeframe.
RBI may revoke approval if applicable conditions are breached or fit-and-proper requirements are no longer satisfied.
π― BANKER CONNECT
Bank shareholding compliance now requires:
Approval + Monitoring + Reporting + Fit & Proper
π EXAM TRAP:
5% β Reporting threshold
10% β Ceiling under the special one-time route
ββββββββββββββββββ
4. π‘οΈ SEBI STRENGTHENS DOCUMENT AUTHENTICATION
SEBI has revamped its Document Number Verification System (DNVS).
The initiative strengthens verification of documents issued by SEBI and addresses risks associated with:
πΉ Fake regulatory communications
πΉ Impersonation
πΉ Fraudulent documents
πΉ Digital misinformation
π― BANKER CONNECT
The same principle applies to banking:
Receive β Verify source β Authenticate β Act
Digital document verification is increasingly becoming an important component of fraud-risk management.
π EXAM POINT:
DNVS β Document Number Verification System
ββββββββββββββββββ
5. π± SEBI PROJECT JAGROOK β INVESTOR PROTECTION MOVES INTO THE APP
Under Project Jagrook, SEBI has directed stock brokers to display investor-awareness messages on their trading apps and websites.
This brings investor education closer to the point where investment decisions are made.
Earlier model:
Information available somewhere
Emerging model:
Risk information visible on the platform
π― IBR INSIGHT
Digital investor protection increasingly requires:
Awareness + Disclosure + Safeguards + Responsible Communication
π EXAM POINT:
Project Jagrook β Investor-awareness messages β Broker apps/websites
ββββββββββββββββββ
6. πΌ SEBI β TOKENISATION ENTERS MARKET-INFRASTRUCTURE DISCUSSION
SEBI's Demat 2.0 pilot includes exploration of tokenised corporate bonds.
Tokenisation could potentially influence:
πΉ Securities settlement
πΉ Digital ownership records
πΉ Transaction efficiency
πΉ Market infrastructure
πΉ Investor access
π― BANKER CONNECT
The important theme is not technology alone:
Technology + Regulation + Investor Protection
π EXAM POINT:
Demat 2.0 β Tokenised corporate bonds
ββββββββββββββββββ
7. π‘οΈ IRDAI β INSURANCE DISTRIBUTION ECONOMICS UNDER REVIEW
IRDAI's consultation paper βRecalibrating Economics of Insurance Distributionβ examines:
πΉ Distribution economics
πΉ Commissions
πΉ Expenses
πΉ Market conduct
πΉ Customer protection
πΉ Transparency
The broader objective is to balance:
Customer value + Distributor viability + Insurer sustainability
β οΈ STATUS:
These are consultation proposals, not final regulations.
π― BANKER CONNECT
Banks involved in bancassurance should monitor the final framework because distribution economics can affect:
Sales incentives + Product economics + Compliance + Customer suitability
ββββββββββββββββββ
8. π§Ύ IRDAI β PUBLIC INSURANCE REGISTRY
IRDAI is progressing the concept of a Public Insurance Registry (PIR).
The proposed digital infrastructure is intended to improve information availability and connectivity across the insurance ecosystem.
Potential areas include:
πΉ Policy information
πΉ Customer servicing
πΉ Claims-related information
πΉ Product information
πΉ Intermediary ecosystem
β οΈ STATUS:
Proposal / consultation stage.
π― IBR INSIGHT
Financial infrastructure is increasingly moving from:
Paper records β Digital records β Integrated financial information
ββββββββββββββββββ
9. π ECONOMY β STRONG DOMESTIC MOMENTUM, EXTERNAL RISKS
The Finance Ministry's latest economic assessment continues to highlight India's domestic resilience.
π Q1 FY27 real GDP growth β 7.8%
The latest assessment also points to risks from:
πΉ Geopolitical tensions
πΉ Crude-oil prices
πΉ Global financial conditions
πΉ Capital-flow volatility
πΉ Food-price pressures
π― BANKER CONNECT
For banks:
Global shock β Inflation / Rupee β Interest rates β Borrower costs β Credit risk
Strong growth therefore needs to be accompanied by prudent risk assessment.
ββββββββββββββββββ
10. π± FOREX β RESERVES PROVIDE A BUFFER, NOT IMMUNITY
Recent market conditions have placed pressure on India's foreign-exchange reserves and the rupee.
Key factors include:
πΉ Global dollar strength
πΉ Crude prices
πΉ Foreign portfolio flows
πΉ Global bond yields
πΉ Geopolitical uncertainty
π― TREASURY CONNECT
Banks should closely monitor:
Import exposure + Export realisation + ECBs + Forward positions + Corporate hedging
π IBR INSIGHT:
Forex reserves provide a buffer; exchange-rate risk still requires active management.
ββββββββββββββββββ
11. πΎ AGRICULTURE β FINANCING THE COMPLETE VALUE CHAIN
Agricultural finance is increasingly moving beyond production finance.
A complete value chain can involve:
Inputs β Farmer/FPO β Aggregation β Storage β Processing β Logistics β Market β Export
This creates financing opportunities in:
πΉ Working capital
πΉ Warehousing
πΉ Processing
πΉ Logistics
πΉ FPO finance
πΉ Trade finance
π― BANKER CONNECT
The question for agricultural lenders is no longer only:
βHow much crop credit can we provide?β
It is also:
βHow much of the agricultural value chain can we finance?β
ββββββββββββββββββ
12. π€ COOPERATIVES β PACS AS MULTIPURPOSE RURAL PLATFORMS
The Ministry of Cooperation continues to promote diversification of PACS.
The emerging model extends beyond traditional crop credit into:
πΉ Dairy
πΉ Fisheries
πΉ Storage
πΉ Inputs
πΉ Procurement
πΉ Processing
πΉ Marketing
πΉ Digital services
π― DCCB CONNECT
PACS diversification β More transactions β Better customer information β Wider financing opportunities
This can strengthen the:
PACS β DCCB β StCB
ecosystem.
ββββββββββββββββββ
13. π³ DIGITAL BANKING β TRUST IS THE NEXT FRONTIER
India's digital-finance scale makes trust and resilience increasingly important.
Banks need stronger systems for:
πΉ Fraud detection
πΉ Cybersecurity
πΉ Authentication
πΉ Transaction monitoring
πΉ Customer awareness
πΉ Dispute resolution
πΉ Operational resilience
π― IBR PRINCIPLE
Digital scale without digital trust is incomplete.
Cyber risk is simultaneously:
Technology Risk + Operational Risk + Financial Risk + Reputation Risk
ββββββββββββββββββ
