π RBI ANNOUNCES βΉ7 LAKH CRORE 30-DAY VRRR
RBI announced a 30-day Variable Rate Reverse Repo (VRRR) auction of βΉ7 lakh crore for 07 September 2026, with an early redemption option.
π― WHY IMPORTANT? The operation is aimed at absorbing the exceptionally high surplus liquidity in the banking system.
β‘ EXAM TRAP: β’ VRRR = liquidity absorption
β’ Banks place funds with RBI
β’ It is a reverse-repo-type liquidity absorption tool, not liquidity injection.
ββββββββββββββββββ
π§ BANKING-SYSTEM LIQUIDITY SURPLUS NEARS βΉ10.3 LAKH CRORE
Banking-system liquidity surplus was around βΉ10.3 lakh crore on 03 September 2026.
The unusually large surplus has been associated with strong foreign-currency inflows, including funds raised through the special RBI swap arrangement.
π― MASTER RECALL: Liquidity surplus β β RBI uses absorption tools such as VRRR.

βοΈ RBI PENALISES 3 CREDIT INFORMATION COMPANIES
RBI imposed monetary penalties on:
β’ TransUnion CIBIL Ltd β βΉ26,82,800
β’ CRIF High Mark Credit Information Services Pvt. Ltd β βΉ6,89,600
β’ Equifax Credit Information Services Pvt. Ltd β βΉ1,19,400
The orders were dated 31 August 2026 and were published/reported on 04 September.
The common regulatory lapse was failure to credit compensation to the bank accounts of certain eligible complainants within the prescribed period under RBI's framework for compensation for delayed updation/rectification of credit information.
π§ SMALL CONCEPT NOTE:
When a customer's credit information is not updated or corrected within the prescribed framework, eligible customers may be entitled to compensation.
Therefore, the responsibility is not merely to correct the credit record; the CIC must also comply with the applicable customer-compensation mechanism and timelines.
π― EXAM TRAP: These penalties were not for lending to customers.
They were related to compliance with the credit-information correction/compensation framework.
β‘ REMEMBER: CIBIL + CRIF High Mark + Equifax β delayed compensation compliance
π LEGAL LINK: The CIC penalties were imposed under the Credit Information Companies (Regulation) Act, 2005 (CICRA).
ββββββββββββββββββ
π¦ SAMMAAN FINSERVE β CRILC REPORTING LAPSE
RBI imposed a βΉ4.20 lakh penalty on Sammaan Finserve Ltd.
Reason: failure to report credit information of its borrower to the Central Repository of Information on Large Credits (CRILC) as required under RBI directions on early recognition of stress and CRILC reporting.
π― EXAM LINK:
CRILC β Central Repository of Information on Large Credits β RBI supervisory credit-information system
β‘ DO NOT CONFUSE:
CICs β credit information/credit history of borrowers
CRILC β RBI's repository for information on large credits
ββββββββββββββββββ

π£ CO-OPERATIVE BANKING β IMPORTANT UPDATE
π¦ UCBs β WIDER EQUITY INVESTMENT FRAMEWORK
RBI's Second Amendment Directions, 2026 relating to the investment portfolio of Urban Co-operative Banks broaden the permitted framework for equity investments necessary for obtaining membership in certain sectoral institutions.
The framework covers eligible investments involving entities such as:
β’ Market Infrastructure Companies (MICs)
β’ Umbrella Organisation (UO)
β’ IDPIC
β’ Central Co-operative Banks (CCBs)
β’ State Co-operative Banks (StCBs)
π― EXAM TRAP:
Permission to make the required equity investment does NOT automatically mean membership is granted.
For the UCB sector, equity participation in the sector's Umbrella Organisation can be relevant where such participation is a prerequisite for membership.

π’ SEBI β FRESH DEVELOPMENT
π€ SEBIβESMA MoU ON CENTRAL COUNTERPARTIES
On 04 September 2026, SEBI signed an MoU with the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) for cooperation and exchange of information relating to Central Counterparties (CCPs).
π― WHY IMPORTANT?
A CCP stands between counterparties in eligible transactions and helps manage counterparty risk and clearing-related functions.
The MoU strengthens regulatory cooperation and information exchange concerning CCPs operating in the relevant cross-border regulatory context.
β‘ MASTER RECALL:
SEBI + ESMA β MoU β CCPs β cooperation & information exchange

π IBR FINAL VERDICT
π₯ Today's strongest exam areas:
RBI VRRR + CIC penalties + CRILC + Coastal LAB + UCB investment framework + SEBIβESMA/CCP + derivative settlement methodology
π PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT FOR MAINS:
βWhy was the penalty imposed?β
Do not memorise only the amount.
Remember the chain:
CIC β credit information correction β prescribed compensation β eligible complainant β delayed credit of compensation β RBI penalty
That conceptual chain is more exam-relevant than merely memorising the penalty figures.
